Lanka to be self-sufficient in milk by 2016

Sri Lanka would be self sufficient in milk by 2016 and will be able to save US$ 400 million a year. That saving could then be utilized for further improvement of dairy farming, a top government official, in the dairy sector, said.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Community Development told The Island that the country had imported 84,000 MT of milk products last year (2011) at a cost of Rs. 30 billion, but with the development of the industry and the country reaching self-sufficiency, it would be able to save a massive sum in foreign exchange.
